Key Features

  • Spectral morphing engine that produces continuous velocity response from a single baseline sample, eliminating the stiffness of layered multisampling
  • Sampled from a 7'4" Kawai grand piano recorded at Electric LarryLand Studios by Grammy-winning engineer Larry Seyer
  • Convolution modeling for built-in room ambience and sympathetic string resonance without external reverb plugins
  • Compact 180 MB footprint delivers the equivalent of eighteen velocity layers compared to over 1 GB for traditional sampling approaches
  • Comprehensive effects section including EQ, chorus, delay, and reverb for shaping the tone directly inside the plugin
  • Adjustable microphone perspectives and hammer voicing controls for tailoring the sound from intimate close-mic to concert hall character
  • Standalone mode included for practice and performance without launching a DAW

Description

CVPiano by Tascam is a virtual grand piano built on spectral morphing technology rather than traditional multisampling. Instead of stacking dozens of discrete velocity layers, the engine processes a single baseline sample and dynamically interpolates frequency characteristics in real time, delivering continuous tonal variation that responds naturally to playing dynamics.

The source instrument is a 7-foot-4-inch Kawai grand piano recorded at Electric LarryLand Studios in Austin, Texas. The piano was recently rebuilt at the time of recording and is known for a shimmering, clear tone, having appeared on sessions with nine-time Grammy-winning engineer Larry Seyer.

Spectral morphing keeps the total footprint at roughly 180 MB while providing the equivalent of eighteen velocity layers, compared to the 1.1 GB required by its predecessor GigaPiano-II. The convolution modeling engine adds realistic room ambience and resonance without relying on external reverb processing.

CVPiano ships with an extensive set of built-in effects and customization controls, letting you shape everything from microphone perspective to hammer voicing. Users consistently praise its realistic tone and dynamic responsiveness, often ranking it among the most convincing acoustic piano plugins available at any price.

The plugin runs as a 32-bit VST on Windows and also functions as a standalone application, making it accessible without a DAW.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CVPiano work on 64-bit DAWs and modern Windows versions?

CVPiano is a 32-bit plugin, so it requires a 32-bit VST bridge such as jBridge or the built-in bridge in some DAWs to load inside a 64-bit host. Users have reported running it successfully on Windows 7, 10, and later using compatibility mode, though some have encountered setup difficulties on newer systems.

What is spectral morphing and how does it differ from regular sampling?

Traditional piano sampling records dozens of velocity layers per key and switches between them as you play harder or softer. Spectral morphing instead captures a single sample per key and uses DSP to dynamically interpolate the frequency spectrum in real time, producing a continuous range of tonal variation that responds more fluidly to velocity changes.

Can CVPiano run without a DAW?

Yes, CVPiano includes a standalone application mode. You can connect a MIDI keyboard and play directly without loading the plugin into a host, which is useful for practice sessions or live performance.

Is CVPiano available for macOS or as a 64-bit plugin?

CVPiano is Windows-only and ships exclusively as a 32-bit VST. Tascam has not released a macOS or 64-bit version. Mac users looking for a similar sound will need to explore other piano virtual instruments.
