Key Features

  • Analog-modeled leveling amplifier inspired by classic opto-electronic hardware limiters like the Teletronix LA-2A
  • Fast peak response with slow program-dependent release for transparent gain reduction and minimal distortion
  • Input gain control from 0 dB to +10 dB with a hard output ceiling at -0.2 dB to prevent digital overs
  • Switchable VU meter displays either input level or gain reduction amount via a single pushbutton toggle
  • Stereo Link mode locks left and right channels to preserve center image stability on stereo material
  • Lightweight 0.70 MB download with minimal CPU usage, suitable for inserting across multiple tracks

Description

DVS Leveling Amp by Martin Best of Dream Vortex Studio is a leveling amplifier modeled after the classic opto-electronic limiters of the 1960s. It applies fast peak reduction with a slow, program-dependent release, keeping dynamics under control while adding subtle warmth and minimizing distortion even when driven hard.

The interface is straightforward: a Gain knob controls the input level from 0 dB to +10 dB, while a Peak Reduction knob sets how aggressively the limiter clamps down. The output is hard-capped at -0.2 dB, preventing overs on the master bus without any additional clipping stage.

A pushbutton VU meter toggles between input level and gain reduction display, giving visual feedback on how much limiting is being applied. The Stereo Link button locks the left and right channels together, preventing the center image from drifting when processing stereo material.

DVS Leveling Amp slots into the same workflow as the Teletronix LA-2A: set the gain, dial in the reduction, and let the optical-style program-dependent response handle the rest. It works best on vocals, bass, and full mixes where transparent leveling and gentle gain riding are more important than aggressive brickwall limiting.

Version 1.2 is a 32-bit VST plugin for Windows weighing just 0.70 MB. Dream Vortex Studio's website is no longer online, but the plugin remains available through third-party archives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware is the DVS Leveling Amp modeled after?

The DVS Leveling Amp is inspired by classic opto-electronic leveling amplifiers from the 1960s, most notably the Teletronix LA-2A. It recreates the behavior of optical compression where a light element and photocell control gain reduction, producing the smooth, program-dependent response these hardware units are known for.

What is the Stereo Link button for?

The Stereo Link (ST Link) button locks the left and right channels so they receive identical gain reduction. Without it, a loud signal on one side could cause uneven compression, shifting the stereo center image. Engaging stereo link is recommended when processing stereo mixes or bus groups.

Can DVS Leveling Amp be used for mastering?

Yes. The plugin was specifically designed for mastering and dynamic range control. Its hard output ceiling at -0.2 dB prevents digital overs, and the program-dependent release avoids audible pumping. For transparent mastering limiting, set the gain at 0 dB and adjust the Peak Reduction knob to tame peaks on your master bus.

Is Dream Vortex Studio's website still available?

No. The developer's website at dreamvortex.co.uk is no longer online. However, DVS Leveling Amp v1.2 remains available for download through third-party plugin archives including SoundShockAudio and plugins4free. The plugin is fully functional without any online activation or registration.
