Description
epicVerb is a free algorithmic reverb from Variety Of Sound, the one-person studio project of Herbert Goldberg (widely known in freeware circles as "bootsie"). First released in 2009, it earned a devoted following for its ability to cover everything from tight ambience to sweeping concert halls — without washing out detail or losing transient clarity.
The plugin is built around a continuous early-reflection-to-tail architecture, where the reverb density evolves naturally rather than switching between two separate stages. This design philosophy mirrors how sound behaves in real physical spaces, and the result is a spatial depth that holds up under scrutiny in a mix.
With the mkII release in 2026, epicVerb returned as a fully 64-bit VST2 and VST3 plugin for Windows. The update introduced a dual-engine true stereo design, improved reverb algorithms, a completely overhauled factory preset library, and a resizable interface — while preserving the signature character that made the original a go-to for over a decade.
The dedicated Ambience mode, which isolates early reflections from the tail, remains one of the most practical features: it adds depth and spatial glue to drums, vocals, or instruments without buildup or smearing.
Note that epicVerb is Windows-only — there is no macOS or Linux build available. Windows-only users on 64-bit hosts can use the included VST3 directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a macOS or Linux version of epicVerb?
No. epicVerb is Windows-only. The developer has not released builds for macOS or Linux, and there are no announced plans to do so. Mac and Linux users will need to look at other algorithmic reverb options.
Does epicVerb mkII support 64-bit DAWs and VST3?
Yes. The mkII release (2026) includes both 64-bit VST2 (.dll) and VST3 formats for Windows. The original epicVerb 1.x was 32-bit only, but the mkII relaunch resolves this for modern hosts like Ableton Live, Reaper, and FL Studio.
Can I use jBridge to run the old 32-bit version in a 64-bit host?
You no longer need to. The mkII release is natively 64-bit. If you have the older 32-bit epicVerb 1.x installed, the new 64-bit mkII is the recommended replacement and is freely available from the Variety Of Sound downloads page.
Does epicVerb replace a Valhalla reverb?
They have a similar use-case scope but different character. Valhalla plugins tend toward clean, modern algorithmic spaces. epicVerb leans more vintage and textured, particularly for rooms and halls with defined early reflections. Many producers keep both, using epicVerb where character is welcome and Valhalla where transparency matters.
