Description

HeadCrusher Free by Audio Assault is a stripped-down freeware version of their HeadCrusher analog saturation plugin. It delivers a single saturation mode modeled on classic analog circuitry, covering everything from subtle tube-like warmth to aggressive, speaker-shredding distortion.

The full paid version of HeadCrusher offers five analog circuit models, filter resonance controls, and distortion character switches. The free edition trades that flexibility for simplicity, giving you a drive knob, tone control, and a low cut filter in a clean, no-nonsense interface.

Bedroom Producers Blog described it as "definitely more of a distortion effect than a subtle mastering grade saturation tool," noting that even small increases to the drive push into audible distortion territory. For individual tracks, however, it performs well and can add tube-like flavor to bass guitars, keyboards, and vocals at lower settings.

The low cut filter drew particular praise from BPB for being "surprisingly transparent" and effective at cleaning up the low end of individual tracks. The tone knob provides additional shaping control for dialing in the right character.

HeadCrusher Free ships as a 2.4 MB download in VST, AU, and RTAS formats for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and macOS systems. Audio Assault has since rebranded their mixing tools under the 5dB5 label.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HeadCrusher Free and the paid version?

HeadCrusher Free includes a single saturation mode, while the paid HeadCrusher (now $5 from Audio Assault / 5dB5) offers five analog circuit models based on different classic hardware, filter resonance controls, distortion character switches, mix knob for parallel processing, and up to 16x oversampling in version 2.

What is the best free saturation plugin?

HeadCrusher Free is a strong choice for aggressive saturation and distortion on individual tracks. Other popular options include Softube Saturation Knob for simple one-knob operation, IVGI by Klanghelm for transparent analog warmth, and Camel Crusher for versatile distortion effects. The best choice depends on whether you need subtle coloring or more aggressive tone shaping.

Can HeadCrusher Free be used on the master bus?

You can, but proceed with caution. BPB's review noted that even small drive increases push into audible distortion, making it better suited for individual tracks than transparent master bus processing. For master bus saturation, consider using it at very low drive settings or pairing it with a limiter to control peaks.

Is HeadCrusher Free compatible with Apple Silicon Macs?

HeadCrusher Free was last updated as a 32-bit and 64-bit plugin for macOS. Some users on plugins4free have reported compatibility issues with newer macOS versions and Apple Silicon. Running it through Rosetta 2 or a 64-bit AU-compatible host may help, but results vary depending on your DAW and system configuration.
