Richie Hawtin, a pioneer of minimalist techno, is pushing the boundaries of DJing with his innovative use of technology, as demonstrated by his new concert series DEX EFX XOX.

Revolutionizing the DJ Booth

Hawtin’s setup for DEX EFX XOX is a testament to his commitment to technological innovation.

He employs a complex array of equipment, including Traktor, Bitwig, his own MODEL 1 mixer, two A&H Xone K2 MIDI controllers, a Novation Launchpad, and custom scripts for on-the-fly control of Roland software emulations like the TR-808, TR-909, and SH-101. 

“It’s about going beyond just putting two records on top of each other,” Hawtin explains. 

“It’s about going beyond the normal decks, or CDJ, or computer, and having other bells, whistles, gizmos, and toys to modify and tweak out the records.”

Embracing New Technologies

One of the most exciting advancements Hawtin is looking forward to is real-time stem separation.

This technology, which allows DJs to isolate and manipulate individual elements of a track in real-time, promises to revolutionize live performances.

Although Hawtin has been reluctant to use pre-prepared stem separation, he is eager to integrate real-time, high-quality stem separation into his sets soon. 

This will enable even more fluid and creative mixing, allowing DJs to craft unique live remixes and mashups on the fly.

A Return to the Roots

Hawtin’s DEX EFX XOX series is not just about technological innovation; it’s also about stripping back the spectacle and focusing on the music.

By minimizing visual distractions, Hawtin aims to recreate the hypnotic, immersive experience of early techno clubs. 

“This show looks back in order to look forward,” he states. “It’s about remembering where this culture came from.” 

This approach is a counterargument to the current trend of all-you-can-eat spectacle that dominates mainstage DJ shows.

The Challenge of Modern DJing

Hawtin acknowledges that the ease of modern DJ technology has lowered the barrier to entry, making it accessible to a broader audience.

However, he also emphasizes the importance of creativity and individuality in DJing. 

“What really interests me is how we connect to these machines physically,” he says. 

“How do we transfer our movements, our emotions, our unique characteristics into the tech? If we don’t have good ways to make that happen then we’re going to end up with a bunch of DJs and producers who all sound the same, and that would be extremely boring.”
