Description

Ruina is a creative stereo multi-distortion plugin from Noise Engineering, built on seven original digital distortion algorithms inspired by their Eurorack hardware. It packs a wavefolder, multiband saturator, chaotic suboctave generator, octavizer, and phase shifter into a single interface with a notch or bandpass filter and adjustable signal routing.

The plugin covers an enormous range of tonal territory, from gentle warmth and subtle coloration to total signal obliteration. An Overdrive control adds up to 128x gain for maximal destruction, while a configurable signal chain lets you reorder the distortion stages to shape entirely different textures.

Ruina ships with an extensive modulation system featuring wave and step sequencer modulators, macro controls, and envelope followers, all assignable to any parameter via drag-and-drop. It is fully MIDI mappable and comes loaded with presets covering everything from soft saturation to aggressive sound mangling.

Producers praise Ruina for its ability to add biting edge to techno percussion, gritty character to synth basses, and experimental texture to vocals and guitars. The plugin is part of Noise Engineering's Freequel Bundle alongside the Sinc Vereor and Virt Vereor synthesizers, available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for Windows and macOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of distortion does Ruina offer?

Ruina features seven distinct distortion types: a wavefolder based on the Noise Engineering Infinifolder, a multiband saturator inspired by the Seca Ruina module, a chaotic suboctave generator, an octavizer (full-wave rectification inspired by the Pura Ruina), a phase shifter, an overdrive with up to 128x gain, and a notch/bandpass filter. You can also reorder the distortion stages in the signal chain for different results.

Can I automate Ruina's parameters in my DAW?

Yes, all of Ruina's controls are fully automatable and MIDI mappable. The plugin also includes its own internal modulation system with wave and step sequencer modulators, macro controls, and envelope followers that can be assigned to any parameter via drag-and-drop.

Is Ruina part of a bundle or standalone?

Ruina is distributed as part of the Freequel Bundle alongside two synthesizers, Sinc Vereor and Virt Vereor. All three plugins are installed together through the Noise Engineering Customer Portal, but they run as independent plugins in your DAW.

What genres and sounds work best with Ruina?

Ruina excels in electronic production, particularly techno and experimental genres where aggressive distortion is a core sound design element. Producers also use it effectively on synth basses for added bite, on vocals for texture and character, and on guitars for unconventional distortion tones.
