Description
Temper by Creative Intent is a modern digital distortion plugin that combines a rich saturation stage with a unique phase distortion algorithm. Unlike traditional waveshaping distortion, it modulates filter coefficients to produce harmonic excitement in the upper frequencies, bringing character and clarity to any element of your mix.
The signal chain starts with a resonant lowpass filter on the input, feeding into the distortion stage where the variable saturation curve and phase distortion interact. A feedback loop through the distortion stage lets you drive the intensity from subtle warmth to aggressive digital grit.
Seven controls shape the tone: Cutoff and Resonance on the input filter, Curve and Drive for the waveshaper, Saturation for the wet/dry blend, Feedback for the loop gain, and Level for output. The built-in real-time spectrum analyzer displays both dry and wet signals simultaneously, making it easy to see exactly how Temper is reshaping your sound.
The distortion character has a distinctive digital warmth with an almost sample-rate-reduction-like flavor that sets it apart from typical clipping or tape-style saturation. Even at aggressive settings, the tone remains musical rather than ear-piercing.
Built with JUCE and Faust, the entire source code is available under GPLv3 on GitHub, where it has earned over 280 stars. Originally sold for $10, Creative Intent released Temper as freeware in early 2018.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Temper's distortion different from other saturation plugins?
Temper uses a phase distortion algorithm that modulates filter coefficients rather than simple waveshaping or clipping. This produces a distinctive harmonic character in the upper frequencies with an almost sample-rate-reduction-like quality that standard saturators and tape emulations cannot replicate.
What is the feedback loop in Temper and how should it be used?
The feedback loop routes the output of the distortion stage back into itself, intensifying the harmonic content and adding complexity to the tone. At lower settings it thickens the saturation subtly, while higher values push the signal into more aggressive, self-oscillating territory. Start with low Feedback values and increase gradually.
Can I build Temper from source or modify the DSP algorithm?
Yes. The full source code is available on GitHub under GPLv3. The DSP algorithm is written in Faust and the UI uses JUCE/C++. You can recompile the Faust code to customize the distortion behavior, then build with Visual Studio 2017 on Windows or Xcode on macOS.
Does Temper support 32-bit hosts?
Yes. Temper ships in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions for all supported formats (VST, VST3, AU), so it works in older 32-bit DAW environments as well as modern 64-bit hosts.
