Description

Tube Preamp by DDMF is a circuit-modeled tube preamp emulation originally developed by Philipp Bulling as an academic thesis on real-time vacuum tube simulation. DDMF took over development and distribution in 2021, continuing to offer it as freeware with plans for future enhancements.

What sets this plugin apart is the depth of its circuit modeling. Rather than offering a simplified drive knob, Tube Preamp exposes every component of the virtual amplifier circuit — capacitors, resistors, cathode biasing, and plate voltage — letting you reshape the tube’s distortion character at the component level.

The triode model is built from characteristic curves of real vacuum tubes, going beyond the simplified Langmuir-Child’s law to capture how actual tubes behave under varying signal conditions. Two plate follower stages connected in series provide the gain structure, with drive and output gain controls for quick adjustments.

For straightforward use, you can simply push the Drive and Output Gain knobs for instant analog warmth and harmonic saturation. For deeper sound design, tweaking individual component values opens up a wide range of distortion flavors, from subtle coloration to aggressive overdrive.

The plugin is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats for Windows 7+, macOS 10.11+, and Linux, with full Apple Silicon support. Version 2.1.3 is the current release, maintained by DDMF.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does DDMF Tube Preamp model the tube circuit differently from other saturation plugins?

Tube Preamp uses a triode model built from the characteristic curves of real vacuum tubes rather than relying on the simplified Langmuir-Child's law. It simulates the complete amplifier circuit including capacitors, resistors, cathode biasing, and plate voltage, allowing component-level adjustments that most saturation plugins do not expose.

Do I need electronics knowledge to use Tube Preamp effectively?

No. While the plugin exposes all circuit components for deep tweaking, you can achieve great results using just the Drive and Output Gain controls. Bedroom Producers Blog noted that experimenting with the component values is rewarding even without understanding the technical details of each parameter.

Does Tube Preamp have a dry/wet mix control?

No, the current version (2.1.3) does not include a dry/wet mix knob. This was noted as a missing feature in the BPB review. For parallel processing, you can use your DAW's built-in channel routing or a plugin wrapper to blend the wet signal with the dry.

Who maintains Tube Preamp and will it continue to receive updates?

DDMF took over development from the original creator Philipp Bulling in May 2021. DDMF has stated they intend to further improve the plugin and potentially add new features, and they have already released version 2.1.3 with expanded format and platform support.
