Description

VOCOTRON by novaflash is a vocoder and voice processor plugin that splits incoming audio into adjustable frequency bands and resynthesizes them with a built-in carrier signal. The result is the classic robotic vocal effect heard across electronic, synthpop, and experimental genres.

The interface is organized into six clearly labeled sections. Input sets the gain level, Split controls the number of analysis bands, and Range defines the low and high frequency boundaries of the vocoder engine.

The Tweak section offers three parameters for fine-tuning the vocoder response: Tail adjusts how long each band rings out, Shift moves the entire frequency map up or down, and Hrmncs controls harmonic emphasis. These controls allow you to shape everything from tight, percussive vocoding to long, atmospheric smears.

Bender adds a pitch envelope triggered by the audio source, with dedicated Attack, Decay, and Amount knobs for dynamic pitch movement on each note onset. This is particularly useful for adding expressiveness to vocoded pads or creating sweeping robotic bass lines.

The Output section rounds things out with Width for stereo spread, Effect for wet/dry balance, and Vol for final level control. VOCOTRON runs as a 32-bit VST on Windows and has been tested in Cubase, Sonar, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Orion, and Reaper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bender section in VOCOTRON used for?

The Bender section adds a pitch envelope that triggers on audio input. You can control the Source level, Attack and Decay times, and the Amount of pitch shift. It is useful for adding sweeping pitch movement to vocoded sounds, making them feel more dynamic and expressive.

Can VOCOTRON process instruments as well as vocals?

Yes. While vocoders are commonly associated with vocal processing, VOCOTRON works on any audio signal. Drums, synth pads, guitars, and other instruments can all be run through the vocoder engine to create unusual textures and rhythmic effects.

How does the Tweak section shape the vocoder sound?

The Tweak section has three controls. Tail adjusts how long each frequency band sustains after the input drops, Shift moves the frequency map up or down for tonal changes, and Hrmncs emphasizes harmonics in the vocoder output. Together they let you move between tight, robotic vocoding and smoother, more resonant effects.
