Description
Yamatube is a dynamic tube processor by SMAO#LAB that combines a Peter Baxandall shelving equalizer with dual analog tube circuits. It adds warmth, density, and harmonic richness to any track by running the signal through two virtual vacuum tubes wired in parallel.
The Baxandall EQ section provides two fixed shelving bands: Edge for upper-midrange presence and Brilliance for high-frequency air. Driving the tubes harder pushes the plugin from subtle coloration into full saturation, and it doubles as a tube clipper at extreme settings.
Version 1.3 added CLAP format support alongside VST3, AU, and LV2. The free edition includes 4x oversampling but omits the limiter, mix knob, and preset library found in the paid Yamatube Pro ($28).
A KVR Audio reviewer rated Yamatube 5 out of 5, praising its "excellent sound quality with tremendous versatility" and resizable GUI. Bedroom Producers Blog highlighted the lo-air control as effective for bass processing and the brilliance control for shaping leads and vocals.
SMAO#LAB is a plugin developer also behind Akira-Tube and the Tarabia series. Yamatube runs on Windows 10/11, macOS 13.7+, and Ubuntu Studio 22, requiring 4 GB RAM and 50 MB of disk space.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best plugin for saturation?
The best saturation plugin depends on the type of coloring you need. Yamatube excels at tube-style warmth using dual analog tube emulations paired with a Baxandall EQ. For multiband saturation FabFilter Saturn 2 is a popular paid choice, while Softube Saturation Knob is another well-known option.
What is the difference between Yamatube Free and Yamatube Pro?
The free version includes two shelving EQ bands and dual tubes with 4x oversampling. Yamatube Pro ($28) adds two extra EQ bands (Presence and Lo-Air), an automatic soft limiter, a mix knob for parallel blending, 8x oversampling, and 20 built-in presets.
Does FabFilter have a saturation plugin?
Yes. FabFilter Saturn 2 is a multiband distortion and saturation plugin with tube, tape, transformer, and guitar amp emulation modes. It costs $149 and offers features like linear phase processing and modulation that go beyond what most saturation plugins provide.
Can Yamatube be used as a soft clipper?
The free version cannot function as a soft clipper because it lacks the built-in limiter. Driving the tubes hard produces tube clipping, but for controlled soft clipping with peak limiting you need Yamatube Pro, which includes an automatic soft limiter that preserves punch and detail.
