Description
M/Ster Balance by Ourafilmes is a mixing utility that gives you fast, intuitive control over stereo width and low-end mono compatibility. Built around a transparent crossover filter and mid-side matrix, it splits your signal into two frequency bands and lets you shape the stereo field with just four knobs.
The crossover section converts everything below a user-defined frequency threshold to mono, keeping your low end tight and phase-coherent. Everything above that threshold passes through a mid-side processor where you set the balance between center and side information.
This approach solves a common mixing problem: wide stereo material that falls apart on mono playback systems. By collapsing only the bass frequencies to mono while preserving stereo content in the mids and highs, M/Ster Balance maintains both punch and spatial width.
A gain compensation knob lets you level-match for accurate A/B comparisons before and after processing. The built-in brickwall limiter catches any peaks at 0 dB FS, preventing clipping when boosting the side signal.
The plugin supports full automation and MIDI learn on all controls, with zero-latency processing that makes it suitable for tracking, mixing, and mastering. It draws on technology from several other Ourafilmes plugins including Master, Bass Bus, and M/S EQ.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does M/Ster Balance actually do to the signal?
M/Ster Balance splits your audio into two frequency bands using a crossover filter. Everything below the threshold is summed to mono for a tighter low end, while everything above is processed through a mid-side matrix where you control the stereo width. This keeps bass frequencies phase-coherent without collapsing your entire mix to mono.
Is M/Ster Balance compatible with 64-bit DAWs?
No. M/Ster Balance is a 32-bit VST plugin built with SynthEdit and only runs natively in 32-bit Windows hosts. To use it in a 64-bit DAW, you would need a bridging tool like jBridge or 32 Lives.
How does M/Ster Balance compare to A1StereoControl?
Both plugins offer bass-to-mono functionality and stereo width control. A1StereoControl supports both 32-bit and 64-bit systems on Windows and Mac, while M/Ster Balance is limited to 32-bit Windows. M/Ster Balance takes a slightly different approach by splitting the signal through a dedicated crossover filter rather than a single safe-bass knob.
Can M/Ster Balance be used on individual tracks or only on the master bus?
It works on any track, bus, or the master channel. On individual tracks, use it to mono the low end of bass-heavy instruments like synth pads or guitar buses. On the master bus, it helps ensure your full mix translates well to mono playback systems.
